Stage Description

This is a very short, entirely flat stage that links two sister seafaring towns, separated only by the mouth of the river Ave. Little more than a brief coastal stroll, it is ideal as a transition day or as the closing leg of a longer stage. The start runs through the old quarter of Vila do Conde, with its impressive Monastery of Santa Clara and its ancient shipyard. After crossing the river, one quickly reaches Póvoa de Varzim, a lively Atlantic city with a long sandy beach, a casino and abundant services. It is a section that combines heritage, a seafaring atmosphere and the ease of a minimal walk.
The section between Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim is the shortest of the Portuguese Coastal Way, an almost immediate transition between two Atlantic cities bound together by history and geography. Both towns look out over the ocean on either side of the mouth of the river Ave, so the day is reduced to a pleasant, flat stroll that asks barely any effort of the pilgrim. The start runs through the old quarter of Vila do Conde, where it is essential to pause before the imposing Monastery of Santa Clara, which dominates the city from on high, and to wander its streets of seafaring tradition and its famous shipyard, the cradle of replicas of historic sailing ships. After crossing the river Ave, the path enters Póvoa de Varzim, a far larger, touristic and cosmopolitan city. Famous for its broad sandy beach, its casino and its bustling seafront promenade lined with restaurants and terraces, Póvoa de Varzim offers a vibrant contrast to the serenity of its neighbour. The city has every service a pilgrim might need, which makes it an ideal place to spend the night, recover strength and enjoy the festive atmosphere of a town devoted to the sea.
