Stage Description

A mid-mountain stage that leaves Villanueva de la Concepción skirting the foothills of El Torcal, whose karst landscape accompanies much of the day. The path then descends towards the plain of Antequera among olive groves and cereal fields. On arrival it is worth setting aside time for the dolmens of Menga and Viera, a World Heritage Site, and for the city's old quarter, one of the most monumental in Andalusia.
The day that links Villanueva de la Concepción with Antequera is a stage with a favourable profile that takes the pilgrim to one of the cities with the most history in Andalusia. The way descends gently, through a landscape of olive groves and cereal fields. The arrival in Antequera is impressive. The city is dominated by its imposing Alcazaba and the Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor. Its old town is a labyrinth of white streets, with more than thirty churches and convents. But Antequera's greatest treasure is its dolmens of Menga, Viera and El Romeral, one of the most important megalithic complexes in Europe, declared a World Heritage Site. The visit is essential. Antequera is an obligatory stop on the Camino Mozárabe, a place to devote time to and to enjoy its immense heritage.
