Stage Description
This stage enters the foothills of the Pyrenees. The profile becomes more demanding, with a continuous up and down through a landscape of hills and valleys. The route passes through charming villages such as Ainhoa, one of the most beautiful in France. It is a day of great beauty that prepares the pilgrim for crossing the border. The destination is Urdax, already in Navarra, a famous locality known for its monastery and prehistoric caves.
The journey between Ustaritz and Urdax is a medium mountain stage that brings the pilgrim to the border with Spain. The profile is a continuous "breaks", with several ascents and descents that demand good effort. The landscape is of exceptional beauty, through the green hills of French Basque Country. The most important milestone of the stage is passing through Ainhoa, a town classified as one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The most beautiful villages of France). Its streets, with its traditional Lapurrian houses, are of extraordinary beauty. After Ainhoa, the path faces the last ascent before crossing the border. The arrival at Urdax, first town in Navarre, is the end of the stage. This locality is famous for its ancient Monastery of San Salvador, of the premonstratensian order, and for its spectacular caves, which were inhabited during prehistory. It is a final stage of great historical and natural richness.
