Stage Description
A stage where the Camino del Norte forks: one variant continues north to Gijón (this stage) and another to Oviedo to connect with the Camino Primitivo. The 30 km to Gijón run along the Asturian coastline with continuous views of the Bay of Biscay. Gijón, the main city of Asturias, offers the hill of Santa Catalina with the Eulogy of the Horizon by Chillida, the neighborhood of Cimavilla with its cider houses and the beach of San Lorenzo in the heart of the city.
This long stage has as its destination the largest city of Asturias. The profile is very demanding, with a hard climb to Alto de la Cruz. It's a mountain day that rewards with spectacular views of the coast and Gijón. After the descent, a long urban stretch leads the pilgrim to the center of the city. Arrival in Gijón, an open-to-the-sea city, with its San Lorenzo beach, Cimadevilla neighborhood, and lively atmosphere, is an unbeatable reward after the effort.
