Stage Description
Cycling stage along the coast of Gipuzkoa and entry into Bizkaia. The 70 km link Zarautz with Markina-Xemein passing through Getaria, Zumaia (with the famous flysch of the Basque Coast), Deba and the interior of Bizkaia. The end in Markina-Xemein, known as 'the University of the cesta-punta' for its pelotari tradition, means leaving the coast to enter the rural valleys of Biscay.
This stage continues over the Land of Bread, on a flat and monotonous route. The arrival at Granja de Moreruela is a key moment, as here the Madrid Road meets the Via Plata. It's a day to enjoy the vastness of the landscape and the solitude of the road. A visit to the ruins of the Cistercian monastery in Moreruela is obligatory.
