Stage Description

After the ruggedness of the mountain, this stage is an enjoyable stroll through the Llanada Alavesa. The profile is completely flat and runs through a landscape of fields of cultivation. It's a comfortable day that allows for rapid progress. The route passes by small villages that preserve their rural charm. The final stretch becomes more urban as it approaches the capital of Euskadi. The arrival in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a city with a magnificently preserved medieval old town and large green areas, is a culturally enriching and high quality of life finale.
The journey between Salvatierra/Agurain and Vitoria-Gasteiz is a transition stage that takes the pilgrim through the Alavesa Plains. The profile is very favorable, practically flat, allowing for comfortable and relaxed walking. The landscape is dominated by fields of cereals, potatoes, and beets, in an open horizon setting. The route runs on dirt paths and tranquil local roads, passing through several small villages that preserve their rural charm, such as Gazeo with its Gothic paintings church. As one approaches Vitoria-Gasteiz, the surroundings become more populated. The city entrance is made through its Green Ring, a set of peri-urban parks that demonstrate why Vitoria was designated European Green Capital. Arrival at the old town, known as "the medieval almond", marks the end of the stage. Its concentric streets, Renaissance palaces, the Cathedral of Santa María ("open for works") and lively atmosphere make Vitoria-Gasteiz one of the most interesting cities in northern Spain.
