French Way from Sarria Standard

The stage that connects Sarria with Portomarín is one of the most iconic and traveled sections of the entire French Way. Along its 22.2 km, the pilgrim immerses himself in the heart of rural Galicia, in a landscape of green hills, lush forests, and small villages. The profile is a continuous uneven terrain, without great ascensions but with constant ups and downs that put the endurance to the test.

The path runs mostly through "corridors", old roads sunk into the ground flanked by stone walls and covered by the shade of oaks and beeches. Numerous traditional village settlements are crossed, such as Barbadelo, with its Romanesque church, or Ferreiros. One of the most anticipated moments arrives near the village of Peruscallo, where a granite milestone marks the symbolic "kilometer 100" to Santiago, a place of celebration and obligatory photography.

The landscape is a delight, with the sound of brooks and the scent of damp earth as constant companions. The final stretch of the stage involves a pronounced descent towards the Miño River, which can be seen from above, enclosed in the Belesar dam.

Entering Portomarín is done crossing a long and modern bridge. The current town is a new construction, since the old one was submerged by the waters of the Belesar dam in the 1960s. However, its most important monuments, such as the imposing church-fortress of San Nicolás, were moved stone by stone to their new location at the top of the hill. This story of resilience and its lively atmosphere make Portomarín a very special final stage.

The journey connecting Portomarín with Palas de Rei is a total immersion in rural Galician landscape. It's known for its "staircase" profile, a continuous up and down that although without great inclines, accumulates unevenness and leg fatigue. The route begins with the departure from Portomarín, ascending progressively until it crowns the Ligonde Mountain Range.

The stage from Palas de Rei to Arzúa is long and demanding but also one of the richest in experiences. The pilgrim faces a broken terrain that is a true rollercoaster of ups and downs, crossing the provincial borders of Lugo and A Coruña. The landscape is a delight, a tapestry of green meadows, oak and eucalyptus forests, and villages with charm such as San Xulián do Camiño or Leboreiro. The most important milestone on the journey is undoubtedly the arrival in Melide. In this crowded village, the French Way and the Primitive Way converge, multiplying the influx of pilgrims and creating an exceptional Jacobean atmosphere. Melide is famous throughout Spain for being the capital of octopus. It's almost a ritual for the pilgrim to stop at one of its many "pulperías" to taste a serving of "octopus à feira". After Melide, the path continues with its wavy profile until Arzúa. This village is another key point on the Camino, as it also brings together pilgrims from the Camino del Norte. Arzúa is famous for its cheese with Denominación de Origen Arzúa-Ulloa, a delicacy that the pilgrim can taste and buy.

The Arzúa to O Pedrouzo stage is loaded with a special feeling: the mix of accumulated fatigue and growing excitement as the finish line approaches. It's a short, gentle stage designed for pilgrims to pace themselves before the final big day. The route is pleasant and calm, mostly following comfortable dirt paths that wind through dense eucalyptus and oak forests. The scent of eucalyptus is one of this section's identifying features. The route is dotted with small villages and farmhouses, such as Pregontoño, Salceda, or Santa Irene, with their hermitage and baroque fountain. High pilgrim traffic converges here, where the Camino Francés, Primitivo, and Northern routes meet, creating a shared atmosphere of camaraderie and anticipation. The day's destination is O Pedrouzo in the concelho of O Pino. This locality has exponentially grown with the heat of the Camino and is fully dedicated to catering to pilgrims. It boasts an enormous range of hostels, guesthouses, restaurants, and shops.

The stage from O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela is the end of the journey. Each step is loaded with symbolic weight and an emotion that increases with each step. The road leaves O Pedrouzo and continues through forest paths between eucalyptus, passing by Amenal and Lavacolla. The last topographic name, Lavacolla, is of great historical importance, as it was here, at the local stream, where medieval pilgrims washed and purified themselves before entering the holy city. After Lavacolla, comes the final big effort: the ascent to Monte do Gozo. Although it's not a hard climb, the anxiety to reach it makes it special. From its summit, 370 meters above sea level, the magical moment occurs: for the first time, the pilgrim sees in the distance the towers of Santiago Cathedral. It is an immense joy, "gozo", that gives the mountain its name. From Monte do Gozo, the descent and entry into the city begin. The urban section, through the neighborhoods of San Lázaro, Fontiñas, and the Rúa de San Pedro, may seem long, but the goal is already within reach. The path leads the pilgrim to the heart of the historic quarter, declared a World Heritage Site. Crossing the Porta do Camiño and walking along the last cobblestone streets, the emotion becomes uncontrollable. Finally, the pilgrim ends up in the majestic Praza do Obradoiro. The sight of the imposing baroque facade of the Cathedral is the end of the Camino, a reward for all the effort.
