Stage Description
This is one of the longest and toughest stages of The Way of Salt, marking the farewell to Andalusia and entry into Extremadura. The journey is a constant challenge over a mountainous and solitary terrain, with strong ascents like that leading to Calvary Hill. The pilgrim must be completely self-sufficient, as there are no services along the entire route. The landscape of dehesas and undermountain is spectacular. Arrival in Monesterio, now in the province of Badajoz and famous for its ham, feels like a great victory after overcoming a major challenge.
The journey that connects Almadén de la Plata with Monesterio is a true challenge for the pilgrim. It's one of the longest, most demanding and solitary stages of the entire Via de la Plata route, which puts physical and mental limits to the test. The route also marks the border between Andalusia and Extremadura.
The profile is a continuous "rocky" terrain through medium mountainous landscape, with two notable ascensions. The first is the ascent to Cerro del Calvario, from where breathtaking panoramic views can be enjoyed. The second part of the stage involves a long descent followed by another considerable climb before reaching the province of Badajoz.
As in the previous day's journey, self-sufficiency is key. There are no sources or villages along the entire route, so bringing enough provisions for the whole day is vital. The path runs through a beautiful landscape of dehesas and low mountains, where the feeling of isolation is total. It's an stage for experienced and well-prepared walkers.
The arrival at Monesterio, the first town in Extremadura, is a moment of great satisfaction. This localidad, located at the foot of the Sierra de Tentudía, is known as "the jamón capital", and offers the pilgrim a well-deserved gastronomic reward. With an excellent range of services, it's the ideal place to rest for one or even two days and recover from the enormous effort made.
