Stage Description

Final stage of the Southeastern Way on its way into Toledo, imperial city UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 19 km leave Almonacid (with its ruined castle dominating the plain) and descend gently through the Toledo Sagra to the entrance to Toledo through the Puerta de Doce Cantos. The arrival at the historic center with the Cathedral, the Alcazar and the Arab, Jewish and Christian quarters is one of the most memorable moments of the Camino.
The journey from Almendralejo to Mérida is a long but very favorable stage, designed to arrive with time and energy at one of the most monumental cities in all of the Iberian Peninsula. The road, after leaving behind the Land of Barros, is an enjoyable stroll through the fertile valley of the Guadiana River. The landscape is predominantly agricultural. The road advances on dirt and asphalt tracks, without any difficulty. The proximity to Mérida can be intuited by the appearance of large infrastructure. But nothing prepares the pilgrim for the impact of arrival. Entering Mérida is done through one of the most impressive ancient engineering works: the Roman Bridge over the Guadiana River. With its 60 arches, crossing it on foot is an overwhelming experience. Once in the city, the pilgrim finds himself in ancient Emerita Augusta. It is indispensable to dedicate time to visit the Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre, the Temple of Diana, the Aqueduct of the Miracles, and the National Roman Art Museum. Mérida is a must-see destination.
