Stage Description

This stage of the Southeastern Route leaves Toledo and heads north towards Ávila. The 28 km cross the Tajo through the bridge of San Martin and enter the region of Torrijos through the countryside of Toledo, with olive groves and cereal fields. Novés is a small town in Toledo with a rural center of agricultural tradition and wineries linked to the D.O. Méntrida.
To unite Mérida and Cáceres in a single day is a major challenge, one of the longest stages of all the Caminos de Santiago routes in Spain. The journey immerses the pilgrim in the essence of Extremaduran heathland. The departure from Mérida is spectacular, passing alongside the Acueducto de los Milagros. The route enters the Cornalvo Natural Park. The main difficulty is the enormous distance and the lack of intermediate services. It's essential to be self-sufficient. The profile is a continuous rise and fall. Arrival in Cáceres is the reward for an epic effort. The Monumental City of Cáceres, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of cobblestone streets, squares, palaces, fortified houses, churches, and convents, all surrounded by an Almohad origin wall. It's one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance ensembles in the world.
