Stage Description
A stage through the inland Saintonge. The roughly 20 km link Aulnay with Saint-Jean-d'Angély, a former royal town founded around a 9th-century Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The town preserves the famous Tours Inachevées (Unfinished Towers) of the old abbey, as well as a medieval historic quarter with half-timbered houses.
The stage from Aulnay-de-Saintonge to Saint-Jean-d'Angély is a short day of 20 kilometres that takes the pilgrim to the historic town of Saint-Jean-d'Angély. The route sets out from Aulnay-de-Saintonge (50 m) and follows a mostly flat profile, with a gentle descent towards Saint-Jean-d'Angély (20 m). The route crosses a landscape of great beauty, with vineyards and farmland. It is a pleasant walk, one that lets you enjoy the scenery and arrive with time to explore the destination town. Reaching Saint-Jean-d'Angély is a moment of great emotion. The town, with its abbey towers, a World Heritage Site, is an architectural gem. This is a stage that combines gentle exercise with a rich historical experience, a perfect balance on the Via Turonensis.
