Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
Stage of the Vegas Altas del Guadiana, in the region of Don Benito-Villanueva. The 22 km run through a fertile agricultural plain irrigated by the Guadiana River, with crops of tomatoes, corn, rice and orchards. Torrefresneda is a small hamlet of the municipality of Guareña in the province of Badajoz, before the entrance to Mérida, capital of Extremadura.
This is a very short stage, almost a stroll, that connects two of the most important villages in El Bierzo. The route is flat and pleasant, ideal for an active rest day. The landscape remains dominated by vineyards. Arrival at the noble Villafranca del Bierzo, known as "The Little Compostela", is the big prize. Its monumental heritage, with the Gate of Forgiveness from Santiago's church, and its great charm, make it a must-see stop before tackling the hard climb to O Cebreiro.
