Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This long stage enters the Las Merindades region. The profile is demanding, with several ups and downs. The landscape is of great beauty, with forests, valleys, and views to the mountains. It's a day of great solitude. The destination is Espinosa de los Monteros, a village with an impressive heritage of Renaissance and Baroque palaces and houses, cradle of the Monteros family of Espinosa.
The stage that connects Villasana de Mena with Espinosa de los Monteros is a long and demanding journey through the Las Merindades region. The profile is a continuous rise and fall, with considerable accumulated slope. The landscape is of great beauty, with oak and beech forests, and panoramic views of the valleys. Arrival in Espinosa de los Monteros marks the end of the stage. This village is famous for being the birthplace of the House of Monteros of Espinosa, the personal guard of the kings of Castile. Its old town is an outdoor museum of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, with numerous palaces and blazoned houses. It is one of the most monumental stops on the Forgotten Path, a place to immerse oneself in the history of noble Castilian society.
