Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This 21.3 km stage is characterized by a very special and awaited milestone for pilgrims: the Wine Spring of Irache Wineries. On leaving Estella, the path passes alongside the Monastery of Irache, where a fountain offers free wine and water to walkers. After this unique refreshment, the route enters a terrain of gentle undulations, crossing vineyards and small oak forests. It is a relatively comfortable day, although with a long stretch without intermediate services. The rural Navarre landscape accompanies the pilgrim until Los Arcos, a village with a monumental church of Saint Mary and a porticoed square full of life, offering well-deserved rest and all necessary services.
The journey of Estella to Los Arcos is one of the most iconic in the first week of the Camino Francés, mainly due to a detail that makes it unique: The Fountain of Wine. Just two kilometers from the exit of Estella, the pilgrim encounters the Bodegas Irache, where a fountain with two faucets offers water on one side and red wine on the other, a gesture of hospitality that has become a photographic ritual and celebration.
Beyond this point, the path enters a typical Navarre landscape, with gentle undulations. The route ascends gradually over the first kilometers, crossing vineyards and olive groves, with some sections passing through forests of oak and chestnut trees. It is an etapa of great scenic beauty, although it's worth noting that after passing the small village of Azqueta, a 12-kilometer stretch without towns or fountains awaits Villamayor de Monjardín. This sector requires good planning and sufficient water supply, especially on hot days.
Villamayor de Monjardín, with its medieval fountain and the remains of its castle atop, is the only significant intermediate nucleus and a good place for a rest. From there, the path continues over agricultural paths in reddish soil, in a more gentle terrain, until arriving at Los Arcos. This village, of notable historical importance, welcomes the pilgrim with the impressive church of Santa María, featuring its spectacular Gothic portal and baroque tower, and an animated covered square, ideal for ending the journey.
