Stage Description
The first stage of the English Way from Ferrol offers a route that combines urban, industrial and rural sections with beautiful views of the estuary. The departure from Ferrol leads the pilgrim on an enjoyable seafront promenade to the historic Monastery of San Martiño de Xubia in Neda. The route continues along the estuary, passing through Fene and Cabanas before crossing the long bridge over the Eume River. The final day ends with the ascent to the historic town of Pontedeume, a medieval village with great charm, dominated by the Torreón of the Andrade family. It is a long stage but with a predominantly flat profile.
The English Way of The Camino begins in the port of Ferrol, in the Curuxeiras neighborhood. This first stage is a long journey that allows the pilgrim to familiarize themselves with the landscape of Galicia's Rías Altas. The departure from the city takes place along its marina promenade, offering nice views of shipyards and the bay. The path soon reaches Narón town and then Neda, where a visit to the medieval Monasterio de San Martiño de Xubia is mandatory. From Neda, the route enters more rural and wooded terrain, with an enjoyable walk along the Belelle River. The stage continues through Fene and Cabanas, always accompanied by the Ares River. The final stretch is one of the most beautiful: crossing the long stone bridge over the Eume River's mouth, which gives access to Pontedeume. This medieval bridge, although heavily restored, is the one that gives the village its name. Once crossed, an uphill slope leads the pilgrim to the heart of Pontedeume's old town.
