Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage is short but demanding, especially in its first part. The journey begins with a tough and prolonged climb as soon as you leave Pontedeume, testing the pilgrim's legs. Once the ascent is overcome, the rest of the route is an enjoyable stroll through the interior of A Coruña province, through a rural landscape of forests and small villages. The stage follows dirt paths and tranquil local roads. It ends in the monumental city of Betanzos, one of the seven capitals of ancient Galicia's kingdom. Its well-preserved historic quarter, with its impressive Gothic churches, and its fame for potato omelette make it an unforgettable stop.
The Pontedeume to Betanzos stage is deceptive. Although the distance is short, the journey is intense due to the strong uphill climb encountered just after leaving Pontedeume. The path leaves the estuary and enters the interior, ascending continuously for several kilometers. Once the high point has been reached, the profile becomes considerably smoother. The rest of the stage is a pleasant and tranquil walk through rural Galicia. The pilgrim walks on dirt tracks and "corridoirs" shaded by eucalyptus and oak trees forests, in an atmosphere of peace and solitude. They pass through small villages such as Miño and Baxoi. The last part of the stage is a gentle descent into the Mandeo River valley. The entrance to Betanzos is spectacular, crossing one of its medieval old gates.
