Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
Transition stage of the Camino del Norte from Gernika to the metropolitan area of Bilbao. The approximately 20 km cross the Bizkargi mountain through pine and eucalyptus forests, with a continuous ascent in the first part and a descent into the Txorierri valley. The route passes through scattered Basque farmhouses and offers views of the green slopes of Biscay. Lezama is a small rural town on the outskirts of Bilbao, the gateway to the Biscayan capital.
The stage that leads to Toledo is a long journey through the La Sagra region in the province of Toledo. The profile is completely flat, and the landscape is dominated by the fields of cereal of the Castile plateau. It's a tough stage due to its length and lack of shade. The road advances on dirt tracks, in an environment of great solitude. As you approach Toledo, the silhouette of the city, with its Alcázar and Cathedral, becomes larger in the horizon, serving as a beacon and motivation. Entering Toledo, crossing one of its historic bridges over the Tajo River, is a magical moment. The city, declared a World Heritage Site, is an inexhaustible treasure. Known as "The City of Three Cultures" for the coexistence of Christians, Jews, and Muslims in the Middle Ages, its heritage reflects this rich history. It's essential to dedicate time to visit the Primada Cathedral, the Alcázar, the San Juan de los Reyes Monastery, the synagogues of the Tránsito and Santa María la Blanca, and to get lost in the narrow streets of its old town.
