Gernika-Lumo is a village with immense symbolic weight, a place of memory and a reference point for Basque identity. For the pilgrim, its visit is a deep lesson in history and a moment for reflection. Immortalized by Picasso, the city was reborn from its ashes after the brutal bombing of 1937. A visit to the House of Councils and the Tree of Gernika, under which the fueros were sworn, is indispensable. The Peace Museum and the Monday Market, one of the most important in the Basque Country, complete its attractions.
