Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
Urban and industrial stage of about 25 km. Leaving Gijón, the route crosses the Asturian industrial belt through Veriña and Tabaza, in one of the least pleasant days of the Camino due to the traffic and the industrial environment. Avilés, however, has a pleasant surprise in store: its medieval old town (one of the best preserved urban areas in Asturias) and the modern Niemeyer Center, the only building by the Brazilian architect in Spain dedicated to the arts.
This stage is a long journey that connects the two major industrial cities of Asturias. The route is mostly flat but runs through a highly humanized landscape with industrial complexes and urbanized areas. It's a transition phase, requiring patience from the pilgrim. Arrival in Avilés is a pleasant surprise. Its old town, one of the best preserved in Asturias, with its porticoed streets and palaces, and the modern Niemeyer Center, offer an interesting architectural contrast.
