Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage ventures into western Asturias, offering a medium-difficulty route through undulating terrain. The trail departs from Grado to tackle the ascent of Alto de la Doriga, before descending into the valley of the Narcea River. An important milestone on the journey is passing through the Monastery of San Salvador in Cornellana, an impressive medieval monastery. The route combines sections along local roads with paths through forests, in a landscape that maintains the essence of rural Asturian countryside. Arrival at the medieval village of Salas, with its imposing defensive tower and collegiate church, marks the crowning glory of a richly historic and natural heritage journey.
The stage between Grado and Salas continues with the tone of interior Asturias: a wavy profile and a predominantly rural and green landscape. The stage does not present the hardness of the previous one, but it requires constant effort. Shortly after leaving Grado, the road begins its ascent to Alto de la Doriga, a gentle slope. After the descent, you arrive at Cornellana, one of the key points of the day. Here you find the imposing Monastery of San Salvador, a cenobium of great historical importance founded in the 11th century. Its Romanesque church and Baroque cloister well deserve a detailed visit. After Cornellana, the road becomes more pleasant, with long stretches along dirt paths that run through forests and alongside small streams. You cross small villages that maintain the flavor of authentic Asturias. It's an stage to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Nonaya valley landscapes. The end of the stage arrives at the village of Salas, one of the most charming localities on the Primitivo Way. Its medieval historic center is very well preserved.
