Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

The first stage of the Vasco-Interior Way is an demanding day that ventures into Guipuzcoan mountains. The route leaves the coast to ascend over a broken terrain with steep slopes. The route passes through a landscape of forests and Basque villages, of great beauty. It's a stage that puts your legs to the test from the very first day. Arrival in Hernani, a town with an animated old town and famous for its cideries, offers a well-deserved cultural and gastronomic reward.
The Vasco-Interior Route begins in Irún, at the border with France. This first stage is a declaration of intent, showing the hardness and beauty of the Basque interior country. The route leaves the coastal plain to ascend decisively into the Guipuzcoan mountains. The profile is very demanding, with continuous ups and downs on mountain trails and forest paths. The landscape is spectacular, a mosaic of dense grasslands, lush forests of beeches and oaks, and the characteristic Basque farmhouses (baserris) scattered up the slopes. It's an episode to enjoy nature in its purest state. You pass through the historic town of Oiartzun. The arrival at Hernani, a medieval old town with a lively town center, is the end of the stage. Hernani is famous for being one of the centers of Basque cider production. Visiting one of its cideries and enjoying the "txotx" ritual is an indispensable cultural and gastronomic experience.
