Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

First cycling stage of the Inland Basque Way, which starts in Irun (border with France) and heads inland through Gipuzkoa following the Oria river valley. The 36 km route combines greenways (Plazaola, former railroad) with stretches of secondary road, crossing Hernani, Andoain and Villabona in an Atlantic landscape of Basque farmhouses, green meadows and oak forests. Tolosa, historical capital of Gipuzkoa until 1854, preserves a medieval old town, traditional Saturday market and is famous for its black beans.
This stage for cyclists is a challenging ride. The route passes through the Eume dunes and the Mariñas region, with continuous climbs and descents. The beauty of the landscape, with Atlantic forests and lush valleys, compensates for the effort. Arrival in Betanzos, one of Galicia's ancient capitals, with its impressive old town, is a monumental reward after an extremely demanding cycling day.
