Stage Description

This is the queen stage of the Forgotten Path, an spectacular high mountain traverse that crosses the Cantabrian Mountains through the Pajares Pass. After topping the pass, a long and vertiginous descent begins down the Asturian slope. The landscape is spectacular, a narrow valley with intense greenery. Arrival in Pola de Lena, an important town at the bottom of the valley, is relief and well-deserved rest after the titanic effort.
The stage that connects Arbas del Puerto with Pola de Lena is the heart of the Forgotten Path, the journey through the Cantabrian Mountains. The journey begins with an ascent to Pajares Pass. Once at the top, almost 1,400 meters above sea level, one enters Asturias. From here on, a long and pronounced descent of over 1,000 meters of drop-off begins. The path descends through the valley of the Pajares River in a spectacular landscape. The descent is very demanding for the knees, so it's recommended to take it calmly. It passes by several villages perched on the slope. Arrival at Pola de Lena, capital of the concejo, marks the end of the stage. This important village, located at the bottom of the valley, is a service center with a great range of accommodations and restaurants. It's an ideal stop to recover from the tough descent.
