Stage Description
A stage through the southern Landes. The roughly 24 km run through the Landes forest mixed with maize fields and meadows. Taller is a small village in the Landes, the gateway to the Adour valley and the Pyrenees. A stage of great solitude through the Atlantic forest.
The Way continues south through the Landes on a flat stage of moderate length in which the pine forest begins to alternate with maize fields and meadows. Between Onesse-Laharie and Taller the landscape gradually announces the nearness of the Adour valley.
The first stretch keeps the forest character of the preceding days, along sandy tracks and minor roads with very little traffic. Dark-watered streams, lined with oaks and alders, cross the route from time to time and break the regularity of the plantations.
The intermediate village is Lesperon, with a church whose sturdy bell tower recalls the old defensive towers of the region. It has a shop or two and is the logical stop of the stage. Around it, the large plots of irrigated maize, the dominant crop in the forest clearings, introduce a new element into the landscape.
From Lesperon the route continues over equally flat ground, among pine woods, oak groves and meadows, with scattered Landes farmsteads. The sense of isolation remains striking and it is unusual to meet other walkers.
Taller is a very small hamlet, but one with a place in the history of Gascony: nearby, around the year 982, Duke William Sancho defeated the Northmen who were ravaging the region, in a battle that put an end to their raids. The village clusters around its church and has hardly any services, so it is essential to arrive with accommodation and dinner arranged.
