Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Stage of the Southeastern Road through the Land of Medina and the Ribera del Duero in Valladolid. The 23 km link Medina del Campo (historic fair town, with the Plaza Mayor and the Castillo de la Mota) with Tordesillas, where the famous Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) was signed, which divided the world between Spain and Portugal. Tordesillas preserves the Royal Convent of Santa Clara, where Juana I of Castile was confined.
The stage that joins Montealegre del Castillo with Pétrola is an immersion in the Manchegan plain. The profile is completely flat, and the road advances through dirt tracks that get lost in the horizon. The landscape is of austere beauty, with cereal fields. The great attraction of the journey is the Salty Lake of Pétrola, a wetland of great importance for the nesting of water birds, among which stands out the flamingo. It's a spectacle to observe these birds in their natural habitat. The arrival at Pétrola, a small Manchegan town, is the end of the stage. Its tranquil atmosphere is perfect for the pilgrim's rest.
