Stage Description
The last stage of the Way of St. James is a short and gentle route that culminates in the capital of Asturias. The route moves away from the mining valley to ascend lightly before approaching Oviedo for its final approach. The path becomes increasingly urban. Entering the city is exciting, and the itinerary leads the pilgrim directly to the heart of the old town. Arrival at the majestic Cathedral of St. Salvador, with its Holy Chamber, is the end of the journey and the reward for the hardship of the Cantabrian traverse. Here, the pilgrim can venerate relics and prepare to start, if desired, the Primitivo Way.
The final stage of the Way of St. James is an enjoyable stroll that takes the pilgrim from Mieres to the destination in Oviedo. It's a short journey, designed to arrive on time at the capital of Asturias and enjoy its charms.
The path starts in Mieres and, after a brief urban section, enters a landscape of gentle hills. The profile includes a small climb, Padrún, which is overcome without great difficulty. Once crowned, it begins a gentle descent into the valley where Oviedo is seated.
The approach to the city is gradual, passing through peripheral neighborhoods before entering the urban center. The excitement builds up as the first streets of the historic quarter are recognized.
The itinerary is designed to take the pilgrim directly to the Cathedral of St. James. The arrival at the Cathedral Square is the end of the Way of St. James. Here, the pilgrim fulfills a tradition: "Who goes to Santiago and does not go to Salvador, visits the servant and not the Lord". The visit to the Holy Chamber, to venerate the Santo Sudario and other relics, is the spiritual crown to this demanding mountain route. From this point, the pilgrim can conclude their journey or prepare to begin a new adventure: the Primitivo Way.
