Oviedo, the elegant capital of the Principality of Asturias, proudly bears the title of birthplace of the Way of St. James. It was here that King Alfonso II the Chaste, in the 9th century, embarked on the first documented pilgrimage to the newly discovered tomb of the Apostle, thus inaugurating the Primitive Route. For the pilgrim, Oviedo is not just a starting point but a sanctuary in itself. Its Cathedral of St. Salvador is an unmissable visit, whose motto reads: "Who goes to Santiago and does not go to the Savior, visits the servant and forgets the Lord", due to the important relics it holds in its Santa Chamber, such as the Holy Sudarium. The city is an outdoor museum of Pre-Romanesque Asturian art, a World Heritage Site, with jewels like Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo. The old town, with its squares, the Fontán market, and lively sidrerías on Gascona Street, offers a cozy atmosphere and all necessary services for starting the adventure. Starting the Primitive Route in Oviedo is connecting with the deepest roots of Jacobean pilgrimage.
