Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

A long coastal day linking Porto with the parish of Marinhas, in the municipality of Esposende, combining in a single leg what the coastal route usually splits into two stages. The Camino leaves Porto along the Douro to its mouth and heads north along the Litoral Boardwalk, over wooden walkways between beaches and dunes through Matosinhos, Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim. Beyond Póvoa, the route continues through the North Coast Natural Park, past the beaches of Aver-o-Mar and Apúlia, until reaching Marinhas, at the gates of Esposende and the Cávado estuary. It is an almost entirely flat walk over boardwalk and sand, demanding for its distance rather than its elevation, with the Atlantic as a constant companion.
The stage linking Porto with Marinhas covers some 52 kilometres of Atlantic coastline and brings together in a single day what the classic coastal-route guide normally divides into two legs. It is therefore a long stage, demanding for its distance though gentle in terms of terrain: the elevation gain is minimal and the surface alternates wooden walkways, seaside promenades and packed sand almost from start to finish.

The exit from Porto descends to the banks of the Douro and follows the river to its mouth on the Atlantic, beside the lighthouse and the castle of São João da Foz. From there the Camino heads north along the Litoral Boardwalk, a continuous ribbon of decking skirting the beaches of Matosinhos, Lavadores and Vila Chã, always with the ocean to the left and the sea breeze for company.

The central section crosses Vila do Conde, with its monastery of Santa Clara and imposing aqueduct, and the neighbouring Póvoa de Varzim, a lively fishing and seaside town where many pilgrims spend the night. This is the point where the standard stage divides; those tackling the full day press on without stopping, pacing themselves for the many hours of walking ahead.

Beyond Póvoa, the route enters the North Coast Natural Park, the wildest and most beautiful section of the day, with the dunes and sandy flats of Aver-o-Mar and Apúlia and their characteristic windmills and salt marshes. The Camino then approaches the Cávado estuary and reaches Marinhas, a parish of the municipality of Esposende that serves as a prelude to the town and as a rest after one of the longest days on the Coastal Portuguese Way.
