Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

First day of the Central Portuguese Way from Porto Cathedral. The departure crosses the northern districts of the city and soon connects with rural sections of the Maia and Vila do Conde municipalities. Pilgrims cross streams, industrial estates softened by groves and small villages such as Araújo and Vilarinho before reaching the Minho countryside. The end of the stage is marked by the arrival at the Monastery of Santa Cristina de Vairão, a Romanesque-Baroque landmark that hosted pilgrims to Compostela for centuries. A long but friendly stage, with moderate gradients and ample services in the first kilometres.
The first stage of the Central Portuguese Way begins right in the Sé do Porto, next to the imposing Cathedral, and immediately faces the classic difficulty of any urban departure. The official route crosses the Douro and leaves the city to the north, with the popular alternative of taking the metro to Vilar do Pinheiro to shorten the route. After leaving Matosinhos and Senhora da Hora behind, the route crosses the northern districts of Porto and gradually escapes the asphalt. Wooded sections, small vegetable gardens and scattered hamlets appear in the Maia and Vila do Conde municipalities, with very gentle gradients and plenty of fountains and cafés. The central section runs along the old Estrada Real, today largely rural, dotted with chapels and granite stone crosses. As it approaches Vila do Conde and Vairão, the landscape opens into "vinho verde" fields and maritime pine forests. Signposting is good and the surface alternates between secondary asphalt and compacted dirt sections. Arrival in Vairão ends a long but manageable day: the pilgrim reaches the rural settlement around the Monastery of Santa Cristina, one of the great heritage jewels of the Portuguese Way, and settles into one of the private accommodations or rural houses accustomed to receiving walkers.
