Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

First cycling stage of the Primitive Way, the oldest Jacobean route (IX century) and considered the route of King Alfonso II. Departure from Oviedo (Cathedral of San Salvador) to the west through the valleys of the Nalón and Narcea rivers. The 50 km are demanding due to the Asturian unevenness, with mixed forests, meadows and rural villages. Salas is a medieval village with a medieval tower and the collegiate church of Santa María. A stage to get your legs used to the Asturian mountains.
Leaving behind the monumental Segovia, this long stage enters the Castilian plain. The route is flat and monotonous, a challenge for the pilgrim's mind. The arrival at Santa María la Real de Nieva, a village with an impressive monastery and a Romanesque cloister, is a monumental final stage. It's a day that defines the experience of walking across the Meseta: solitude, effort, and the austere beauty of the plain.
