Stage Description
A medium-difficulty stage marking the penultimate day before reaching Santiago de Compostela. The path leaves Padrón, the town where tradition holds that the body of the Apostle Saint James arrived by boat, and climbs progressively through the hills surrounding the valley of the River Sar. The profile is mostly ascending, gaining altitude through forests and rural villages. The stage requires considerable physical effort, but the excitement of knowing Santiago is near drives the pilgrim forward. O Milladoiro, already within the municipality of Santiago, is the gateway to the city of the Apostle.
The stage between Padrón and O Milladoiro is an exciting day that brings the pilgrim to the doorstep of Santiago de Compostela. The path leaves Padrón, a town steeped in Jacobean significance: here stands the Pedrón, the stone to which, according to legend, the boat carrying the body of the Apostle Saint James from the Holy Land was moored.
The first few kilometres run through the valley of the River Sar, in a relatively flat setting of orchards and vineyards. But soon the path begins to climb, starting a gradual ascent that characterises much of the day. Altitude is gained along forest tracks and rural paths through dense eucalyptus and pine forests.
The central section is the most demanding, with steep ramps that test the pilgrim's endurance. However, the small villages crossed along the way offer rest stops and the chance to recharge. The landscapes from the higher areas are expansive, with views stretching across the green valleys.
As one progresses, signage indicates the proximity of Santiago, injecting an extra dose of motivation. The path passes through settlements ever closer to the Galician capital, with the transition from rural to peri-urban becoming evident.
O Milladoiro, already within the municipal boundaries of Santiago de Compostela, is the last stop before the finish. From here, weather permitting, the towers of the Cathedral can be glimpsed for the first time. The pilgrim can rest knowing that the following day will bring the completion of the pilgrimage with a short and emotional stage to the Plaza del Obradoiro.
