The Town

Discover Padrón

Padrón is a town of capital importance in the history of the Camino de Santiago; it is, in fact, the cradle of the entire Jacobean tradition. According to legend, it was here, in ancient Iria Flavia, that the stone boat carrying the remains of the Apostle Santiago from Palestine moored after its long voyage. The "Pedrón," the mooring stone that gives the town its name, is preserved beneath the high altar of the church of Santiago and is a must-see for every pilgrim. This direct connection with the origins makes Padrón the last great symbolic stop before Santiago de Compostela on the Camino Portugués. The town, also the birthplace of illustrious writers such as Rosalía de Castro and Camilo José Cela, offers a pleasant stroll along the banks of the Sar River. Beyond its historical weight, it is world-famous for its peppers, whose motto "uns pican e outros non" is known to all. With good albergues and services, Padrón is the perfect place for a last night of reflection and for savoring the local cuisine before the thrilling final stage to the Cathedral.
