Stage Description
The trail starts from Ponferrada and enters a landscape of orchards, vineyards, and fruit trees. Passes through several towns such as Columbrianos and Camponaraya. In Camponaraya, the pilgrim can choose between the official route, which follows the road, or a longer but much more beautiful variant that winds its way through the vineyards, known as the Way of the Vineyards.
The most important town before the finish is Cacabelos, a village with great Jacobean tradition. Its bridge over the river Cúa, the church of Santa María and the Archaeological Museum are points of interest. It's a perfect place to stop and enjoy a wine from the Bierzo Denomination of Origin.
The final stretch follows the course of the Valcarce River, on an enjoyable stroll that leads to Villafranca del Bierzo. This village, of great historical importance, is known as "Little Compostela". Its nickname comes from its church of Santiago which has a Gate of Forgiveness, which in medieval times granted indulgence to pilgrims who couldn't continue to Santiago due to illness. Its Water Street, with its palaces and blazoned houses, its castle and its Colegiata of Santa María, make Villafranca an enchanting place and an obligatory stop.
