Discover Villafranca del Bierzo

Villafranca del Bierzo, one of the most beautiful and charming villages on the Camino Francés, is known as "Little Compostela". This nickname stems from a medieval privilege that still endures: pilgrims who, due to illness, could not continue their journey to Santiago, could obtain the same indulgences by passing through the Door of Forgiveness at their church in Santiago. This fact confers the village with a very special spiritual aura. Located in the fertile El Bierzo region, Villafranca offers a restorative break before the difficult ascent to O Cebreiro. Its historic core is a treasure trove of blazoned houses, convents, and churches, particularly the Calle del Agua Street. The Colegiata of Saint Mary and the Castle of the Marquesses complete its rich heritage. For pilgrims, it's an obligatory stop, a place to enjoy the excellent wines from the Bierzo D.O. and its cuisine. It marks the end of the meseta and the beginning of the Galician mountains, a place of history, forgiveness, and beauty on the Jacobean route.
