Discover Betanzos

Betanzos, known as "The City of Knights", is one of the most important and monumentally rich stops on the Camino Inglés. Former capital of one of the seven provinces of the Kingdom of Galicia, its glorious past is reflected in a historic quarter, declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble, which is an authentic gem of Gothic Galician architecture. The pilgrim arriving at Betanzos finds himself in a maze of steep and paved streets flanked by noble houses and arcades. Its churches of San Francisco and Santa María do Azougue are magnificent examples of Gothic art, with impressive tombs and sculptural details. The Plaza de la Constitución, with the church of Santiago, is the heart of the town. But Betanzos is also a stop for the pleasure of the palate; it is the birthplace of the famous Betanzos tortilla, juicy and slightly runny, a delicacy that every pilgrim must try. With good hostels and services, the city offers a deep bath in history, art, and gastronomy before facing the final stages towards Santiago de Compostela.
