Stage Description
A stage that ends in Saintes, a Roman and medieval city with one of the richest monumental ensembles in south-west France. The roughly 25 km cross rural Saintonge. Saintes (the Roman Mediolanum Santonum) is home to the Roman amphitheatre, the Arch of Germanicus, the Romanesque basilica of Saint-Eutrope and the Abbaye aux Dames, all UNESCO World Heritage.
The stage from Saint-Jean-d'Angély to Saintes is a day of 25 kilometres that follows the course of the river Boutonne. The way sets out from Saint-Jean-d'Angély (20 m) and follows a mostly flat profile, with a gentle descent towards Saintes (10 m). The route crosses a landscape of great beauty, following the river for part of the way. It is a pleasant walk that lets you enjoy the scenery and the peace of the surroundings. Arrival in Saintes, a city with an impressive Roman and Romanesque heritage, makes for a monumental end to the stage. Its triumphal arch, its amphitheatre and the church of Saint-Eutrope, a World Heritage Site, make it one of the most important stops on the way. It is a stage that combines gentle exercise with a rich historical experience, a perfect balance on the Via Turonensis.
