Stage Description

The first stage of the South East Way starts in the city of Alicante, by the Mediterranean Sea. It is a transition phase that takes the pilgrim out of the big city and into the Vinalopó valley. The profile is a gentle but continuous ascent. The landscape is a mix of urbanized areas and cultivated fields. Arrival at Novelda, a city with a rich modernist heritage, offers an interesting cultural endpoint.
The South East Way starts in Alicante, at the feet of Santa Barbara Castle. This first stage is a long urban and peri-urban journey that crosses the Vinalopó valley. The profile is a gentle but constant ascent. The landscape is dominated by cultivated fields, especially vineyards for table grapes. The route passes through Monforte del Cid. Arrival in Novelda marks the end of the stage. This city is famous for its marble and spice production, but above all for its surprising modernist heritage. The Modernist House-Museum and the Sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene, an inspired work by Gaudí's Sagrada Familia, are a must-see. It's a final stage that surprises and enriches the pilgrim.
