Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

The Silver Way begins in the heart of Seville, alongside the majestic Cathedral. This first 21.9 km stage is a long urban and peri-urban journey that allows pilgrims to bid farewell to Andalusian capital. The route passes through the city, crosses the Guadalquivir and goes alongside the Roman ruins of Itálica in Santiponce, birthplace of emperors Trajan and Adrian. The rest of the path is a long straight line across the white Sevillian plain, without shadows, making it very hard during hot times. Arrival at Guillena, a white Andalusian town, offers the first rest on this long journey.
The starting point of the Via de la Plata is located at the imposing Cathedral of Seville, next to the Giralda. The first stage, 21.9 km until Guillena, is a challenge, not because of its little elevation, but due to its urban character and sun exposure.

The initial kilometers are a monumental walk through the center of Seville, crossing the famous Puente de Triana. The exit from the city is long and can be somewhat monotonous. The first major historical milestone is at Santiponce: the impressive ruins of the Roman city of Itálica. A visit to its amphitheater and mosaics is almost obligatory and transports the pilgrim back to the Roman origins of this road.

After Santiponce, the Way becomes a long and straight dirt path that advances through the Guadalquivir valley, an agricultural landscape of orange groves and cotton fields. This section is completely flat but lacks shade, making it a true oven in the summer months. It's essential to start walking early and carry plenty of water.

The arrival at Guillena, a typical white village of the Andalusian countryside, is a relief. The town offers lodging and all necessary services for recovering from the first and difficult day, and preparing for the next days' journey into the Sierra Morena dehesas.
