Stage Description
A stage through the south of the Landes towards the French Basque Country. The roughly 21 km cross the Adour valley, entering the Béarn-Chalosse area. Peyrehorade is a picturesque town on the banks of the Gaves de Pau and d'Oloron, the gateway to the Basque Country. It has an old quarter of half-timbered houses and a well-preserved rural heritage.
The Way leaves Dax heading south and crosses the gentle hills that separate the Adour from the Gaves. After the uniformity of the pine forest, the landscape becomes varied and rolling: meadows, maize fields, oak copses and villages gathered around their churches. The stage is of moderate length, with a few short ups and downs.
The first village is Saint-Pandelon, where a château that was the residence of the bishops of Dax overlooks the valley. The route continues along country lanes and quiet roads, with the first horizons of the Pyrenean range visible on clear days.
Cagnotte, halfway through the day, preserves the church of a former Benedictine abbey that served as the burial place of the viscounts of Orthe, lords of this district. The church, of Romanesque origin, holds ancient capitals and sarcophagi and was a place of welcome for pilgrims.
The final stretch descends to the valley of the Gaves Réunis, the name given to the river formed by the meeting of the Gave de Pau and the Gave d'Oloron shortly before it flows into the Adour. This is the Pays d'Orthe, a land of transition between the Landes, Béarn and the Basque Country.
Peyrehorade, its capital, stretches along the river, which was for centuries a busy transport route. Beside the quay stands the Château de Montréal, a sixteenth-century building flanked by four towers, and on the hilltop remain the ruins of the castle of Aspremont. The town, with a traditional market and all services, makes a good stage end.
