Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This stage of the Camino del Levante links Tembleque (with its famous 17th century Plaza Mayor, one of the most beautiful in Castilla-La Mancha, with its three floors of arcaded galleries) with Mora (Toledo), the Spanish capital of extra virgin olive oil. The 27 km are flat through the Mancha toledana, with cereal fields and olive groves of the D.O. Oil Montes de Toledo.
The Tembleque to Mora stage is a 24.7 km journey that introduces the pilgrim into the Toledo Hills region, leaving behind La Mancha's strict plain. The route starts from the monumental Tembleque (641 m) and enters a landscape dominated by extensive olive groves which give fame to the region. The profile of the stage is undulating, with a progressive but gentle ascent that accumulates a positive elevation gain of over 100 meters. The route follows dirt tracks and rural roads in a peaceful and beautiful environment. Along the way, one passes through Turleque village, which offers a rest stop. Arrival at Mora (715 m), known as "the olive of Spain", is an immersion into olive oil culture. The town is an important centre for olive oil production with Denominación de Origen Montes de Toledo. The pilgrim can visit its ruined castle, the church of Our Lady of Altagracia and, of course, some of its mills to see the process of making "liquid gold". This stage combines a pleasant physical exercise with an interesting gastronomic and cultural experience, a true delight for the senses.
