Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This is one of the "superstages" of the Via de la Plata, a long journey that unites two UNESCO World Heritage cities. The route is very demanding due to the distance, crossing a beautiful but solitary landscape of pastures and reservoirs. The route passes through the Cornalvo Natural Park. It's an only suitable stage for highly prepared pilgrims or can be divided into two. Arrival in Cáceres, with its medieval and Renaissance monumental city, is an unbeatable reward.
To unite Mérida and Cáceres in a single day is a major challenge, one of the longest stages of all the Caminos de Santiago routes in Spain. The journey immerses the pilgrim in the essence of Extremaduran heathland. The departure from Mérida is spectacular, passing alongside the Acueducto de los Milagros. The route enters the Cornalvo Natural Park. The main difficulty is the enormous distance and the lack of intermediate services. It's essential to be self-sufficient. The profile is a continuous rise and fall. Arrival in Cáceres is the reward for an epic effort. The Monumental City of Cáceres, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of cobblestone streets, squares, palaces, fortified houses, churches, and convents, all surrounded by an Almohad origin wall. It's one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance ensembles in the world.
