Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This stage marks the return to the province of Toledo. The profile is mainly descending, an enjoyable stroll that approaches the valley of the River Alberche. The landscape is a mix of pastures and fields of cultivation. The great delight of the journey is the arrival at Escalona, a village with an impressive castle-palace on the banks of the river. Its medieval bridge and its Main Square complete a monumental ensemble of great beauty.
This stage enters the Gascony region, a land of hills and agricultural fields. The route is demanding, with an undulating profile and continuous ups and downs. Arrival in Auch, Gascony's capital, with its imposing Cathedral of Saint Mary and Monumental Staircase, is a culturally rich final stage. It is a stage that requires good physical preparation but rewards with spectacular landscapes.
