Stage Description

Short stage between two fishing villages of the Arousa estuary. The route skirts the estuary passing by beaches and areas of bateas (floating structures for mussel cultivation, visual icon of the estuary). Vilagarcía de Arousa is the capital of the Salnés region and an important commercial port and marina, with an urban center linked to fishing and seafood. Key point of the Route of Padre Sarmiento.
The Vilarinho to Barcelos stage is a 27km journey that continues through Portuguese countryside. The path starts at Vilarinho (80m) and follows an undulating profile with a gentle overall descent towards Barcelos (50m). The route passes through a beautiful landscape, with forests and hills, and spectacular views. It's a demanding walk due to its length but rewards with the beauty of its scenery and the tranquility of the surroundings. Arrival in Barcelos, the city of the rooster, one of Portugal's symbols, is an end-of-stage finish with charm. This stage combines gentle exercise with rich historical experience, a perfect balance on the Portuguese Way.
