Stage Description
This is one of the most difficult, mythical and beautiful stages of the Camino Francés. With 27.8 kilometers, the journey involves ascending from the Valcarce valley to the top of O Cebreiro, the entrance to Galicia. The first part is a gentle stroll along the river, but the last eight kilometers from Herrerías are an unrelenting and grueling climb, especially the final stretch from La Laguna. The effort is extreme, but the reward is immense: a spectacular mountain landscape and the excitement of arriving at the magical village of O Cebreiro, with its pre-Romanesque pallozas, miraculous church, and atmosphere that transports you to another era. This stage leaves an indelible mark on every pilgrim.
The ascent to O Cebreiro from Villafranca del Bierzo is, along with the crossing of the Pyrenees, the mountain stage par excellence of the French Way. Its 27.8 km are a legendary challenge that marks the border between Castile and León and Galicia, and a turning point in the pilgrimage.
The first 20 kilometers is a false flat ascending section following the course of the river Valcarce. The path runs in a narrow valley, often close to the road, passing through small villages like Pereje, Trabadelo and Vega de Valcarce. This section serves as a warm-up for what's to come.
The true difficulty begins at Herrerías de Valcarce. From here, there are 8 km of continuous ascent. A first steep section leads to La Faba. After this village, the path becomes even more demanding until reaching Laguna de Castilla, the last Leónese town. The final 2 km is the hardest part. A mountain trail with a very pronounced slope that takes the pilgrim up to the top at an altitude of 1,300 meters.
Arrival in O Cebreiro is a moment of euphoria and emotion. This small village, often shrouded in mist, seems straight out of a story. Its "pallozas", ancient Celtic homes with thatched roofs, and its small preromanic church of Santa María la Real, where the miracle of the Galician Holy Grail took place, create a magical atmosphere. The views from the top, if the weather permits, are spectacular. Overcoming this stage is one of the greatest achievements for the pilgrim on their way to Santiago.
