Also, the historic capital of Gascony is a monumental stop on the Via Tolosana. The city is divided into an upper part, dominated by the imposing Cathedral of Sainte-Marie, and a lower part, along the Gers River. For pilgrims, a visit to the cathedral is essential; it's a gem of Gothic Flamboyant with a carved wooden choir and spectacular Renaissance windows, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. To connect the two parts of the city, the Monumental Stairway stands, with 374 steps and a statue of the famous musketeer D'Artagnan, a native of the region. The old town, with its narrow alleys ("pousterles"), invites a stroll full of history. With good services for walkers and a gastronomy based on Gascony products (such as foie gras and armagnac), Auch is a stop that offers deep cultural enrichment.
