Discover Le Puy-en-Velay

Le Puy-en-Velay is one of the most spectacular and spiritually significant starting points of all the Caminos de Santiago. The beginning of the Via Podiensis, France's most famous route, this Auvernia town sits in a unique volcanic landscape. Its Notre-Dame Cathedral, UNESCO World Heritage Site, rises majestically atop Mont Anis, and pilgrims must climb a long staircase to reach it and attend a blessing mass before departing. The image of the Black Virgin is an object of deep devotion. Two other landmarks dominate the landscape: the Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe chapel, incredibly built on a volcanic spire, and the monumental statue of Notre-Dame de France. For pilgrims, Le Puy is a magical place, a pilgrimage center for over a thousand years. The atmosphere in its streets, filled with pilgrims starting their journey, is palpably emotional. It's undoubtedly a start to a pilgrimage that elevates the spirit and prepares one for a long journey.
