Villena, a historic city in the interior of Alicante province, is a monumental stop on the Camino del Sureste. Its profile is unmistakably dominated by the majestic Castillo de la Atalaya, an Arab fortress that has witnessed numerous battles and offers spectacular views of the Vinalopó valley. For pilgrims, arrival in Villena means meeting with the history of borderlands between Castile and Aragon. The city is also famous for the Treasure of Villena, one of the most important metalwork discoveries of the Bronze Age in Europe. The old town invites a peaceful stroll, discovering the archpriestal church of Santiago, Gothic style, and the church of Santa María.
