Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This long stage brings the pilgrim to the monumental city of Salamanca. The route runs through the Salamanca meadowland, on a terrain of gentle undulations. It's a day of great beauty, although demanding due to distance. The final stretch becomes increasingly urban. Arrival in Salamanca, the "Golden City", declared World Heritage Site, is an unbeatable reward. Its Plaza Mayor, its cathedrals and its University make it one of the most spectacular stops on any pilgrimage.
The stage that leads to Salamanca is a long journey through the Campo Charro salamantino. The profile is undulating, a continuous rise and fall over gentle hills covered with oak woodlands. The road runs along dirt tracks and cattle lanes, in an environment of great beauty and solitude. As it approaches Salamanca, the landscape opens up and the terrain becomes more flat. The entrance to the city is spectacular, crossing the Roman Bridge over the River Tormes, with the cathedrals cutting across the horizon. Salamanca, "Little Rome", is one of Spain's most beautiful cities. Its heritage is boundless: the Plaza Mayor, one of the world's most beautiful squares; the two cathedrals, the Old (Romanic) and the New (Gothic); the University, with its ornate façade; the House of the Shells... It's a city that deserves at least a full day to be spent there, to get lost in its golden streets and enjoy its university and cultural atmosphere.
