Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Farewell stage of Cantabria and entry into Asturias by Colombres. The 28 km link Comillas with Colombres through San Vicente de la Barquera (with its famous bridge over the estuary and the church of Santa María de los Ángeles) and the Natural Park of Oyambre. Colombres is the first Asturian town on the Camino, home to the Archivo de Indianos in the spectacular Quinta Guadalupe, an example of 19th century Indiano architecture.
The stage that leads to Salamanca is a long journey through the Campo Charro salamantino. The profile is undulating, a continuous rise and fall over gentle hills covered with oak woodlands. The road runs along dirt tracks and cattle lanes, in an environment of great beauty and solitude. As it approaches Salamanca, the landscape opens up and the terrain becomes more flat. The entrance to the city is spectacular, crossing the Roman Bridge over the River Tormes, with the cathedrals cutting across the horizon. Salamanca, "Little Rome", is one of Spain's most beautiful cities. Its heritage is boundless: the Plaza Mayor, one of the world's most beautiful squares; the two cathedrals, the Old (Romanic) and the New (Gothic); the University, with its ornate façade; the House of the Shells... It's a city that deserves at least a full day to be spent there, to get lost in its golden streets and enjoy its university and cultural atmosphere.
