Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Stage towards the Cantabrian capital. From Güemes the route continues along the coast passing through Galizano and the cove of Loredo, to cross the bay of Santander by boat (daily service from Somo). The approximately 16 km stage is among the most spectacular in the North, with the entrance to Santander by sea as the highlight. Santander, the capital of Cantabria, offers the Palacio de la Magdalena, the Sardinero and a historic center rebuilt after the fire of 1941.
The stage that begins in Plasencia is a journey through time to the Roman era. The path enters the Ambroz Valley, on a terrain of gentle ascent. The route follows the ancient Roman road faithfully and the pilgrim can walk over original sections and see several milestones. The destination and main attraction of the journey are the ruins of the Roman city of Cáparra. This archaeological site is one of the most important along the Via de la Plata. Its icon is the Arco de Cáparra, an impressive quadrifrontal arch (four-faced) that stood in the center of the city's forum. Walking through the cardo and decumano of the ancient city, visiting its interpretation center, and contemplating the arch is an unforgettable experience. The end of the stage usually takes place in Oliva de Plasencia, the closest town to the site, which offers the necessary services for the pilgrim.
