Stage Description

First stage of the Spiritual Variant of the Portuguese Way. After leaving Pontevedra through the monastery of San Xoán de Poio, the route deviates from the central route and follows the banks of the estuary to Combarro, one of the most photogenic fishing villages of the Rías Baixas, famous for its hórreos by the sea. From there, the road enters the mountains of Salnés with a continuous and sustained ascent to the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de A Armenteira, founded in the 12th century. The stage is about 21 km long, with an undulating profile and a demanding final stretch. The landscape combines sea, granaries, Albariño vineyards and Atlantic forest of oak and eucalyptus trees.
This stage is famous for its long stretch without any intermediate villages, following the route of the ancient Roman road Vía Aquitana. It's a day of solitude and introspection, an immersion in the vastness of the Meseta. The path is an endless straight line, flat and without shadows, which puts the pilgrim to the test, who must carry enough water and provisions. Arrival at Ledigos, a small village with a cozy hostel, is relief and well-deserved rest after one of the most authentic experiences in Castile's plain.
